H.M. Queen Sofia’s Office started the planning stage, seeking information regarding advances on every aspect of the disease.
January: The first meetings, chaired by H.M. the Queen were held with highest-level representatives of the country’s three administrations: central, autonomous and local.
June:H.M. the Queen visited several building sites in Madrid, finally choosing one in the Vallecas district.
June:A restricted call for tenders was launched for awarding the architectural project.
October:The project presented by Estudio Lamela Architects won the tender
December:H.M. the Queen and the Mayor of Madrid, Mr. José Mª Alvarez del Manzano, signed the transfer of the building site to the Queen Sofia Foundation.
December:Their Majesties King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia presented the Alzheimer Project to Spanish society, in the course of a reception held at El Pardo Palace on 17 December, 2002.
From April to June several experts met to develop the base design and the working project.
April:The working group presented their final conclusions to H.M. the Queen at the Estudio Lamela.
February:The Queen Sofia Foundation, the Ministry of Work and Social Affairs and the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs signed a Program Agreement for building the Alzheimer Centre.
June:Once the building license was granted and after several months’ requesting and considering bids, the building contract was awarded to the firm Rayet.
July:Start of the first earthmoving works at the Vallecas site.
September:1st Symposium on Advances in Research on Alzheimer’s Disease.
October:Placing of the Centre’s foundation stone in the presence of H.M. the Queen.
February:Signature of a Collaboration Agreement between the Mutua Madrileña Medical Research Foundation and the Queen Sofia Foundation for building the Centre and financing research programs.
September:2nd Symposium on Advances in Research on Alzheimer’s Disease.
December:Signature of a Collaboration Agreement between the Madrid Autonomous Government and the Queen Sofia Foundation for the management and equipment of the Centre.
January:Signature of an Agreement between the Research Centre for Neurological Diseases Foundation and the Queen Sofia Foundation for the management of the Alzheimer Project’s Research Unit.
January:Addenda to the Collaboration Agreement between the Mutua Madrileña Medical Research Foundation and the Queen Sofia Foundation for the equipment of the Research Unit and the Centre’s domotics system.
September:3rd Symposium on Advances in Research on Alzheimer’s Disease.
January:Agreement for the transfer of the Alzheimer Centre by the Queen Sofia Foundation to the Department for the Family and Social Affairs, except the Research Unit.
January:Agreement for the transfer of the Research Unit to the Research Centre for Neurological Diseases Foundation.
March:Their Majesties the Queen and Queen of Spain officially opened the Alzheimer Centre.
June: Three months after starting up the premises, staff and patient selection, the first inmates began to be admitted to the Centre.
September:4th Symposium on Advances in Research on Alzheimer’s Disease.
June:Candidates are chosen from the 1st Call for Research Projects.
September:5th Symposium on Advances in Research on Alzheimer’s Disease.
July:Candidates are chosen from the 2nd Call for Research Projects.
September:6th Symposium on Advances in Research on Alzheimer’s Disease.
October:Signature of Agreement for the creation of the Consortium “International Year of Research on Alzheimer 2011”.
September:7th. Symposium on Advances in Research on Alzheimer’s Disease.
May:The Queen Sofia Foundation signs an agreement to run the “Memory Bank” campaign.
September:The World Summit on Advances in Research on Alzheimer’s Disease, chaired by H.M. the Queen, was held at the Congress and Exhibitions Palace in Madrid.
May: The Queen Sofia Foundation agreed to spend 2.100.000 Euros in research projects on Alzheimer’s Disease.
June:The Queen Sofia Foundation released another 271.000 Euros for research projects by the Alzheimer Centre’s Research Unit.
June:Planning starts for the creation of a National Research Centre on Alzheimer’s Disease.
September:8th Symposium on Advances in Research on Alzheimer’s Disease.
